Mr. Darko Zganec, the chief engineer of Engineering systems in Bombardier Transportation, lets us know how they use WiseImage.
«As you know we started using the older version RxAutoImage a while back» Mr. Darko Zganec says.
«We had 2 licences that were running on AutoCAD 2000i». «As that version of AutoCAD was not longer supported by Autodesk we had to upgrade those 2 licences with WiseImage». «Initially we replaced 2 licences with the 2 network licences of WiseImage and later added another network licence as well as more of a temporary licence».
«Our primary use of Wise image is to update old engineering drawings for some refurbishment projects». «In railway industry the rolling stock vehicles are designed and build for the life of 30 years».
«Vehicles that have been built in 1970-1980 are now due for the major refurbishment». «Bombardier Transportation Australia has received 2 major refurbishment contracts from the Railway operator in Sydney to upgrade Endeavour / Explorer vehicles and another contract to upgrade Class 3000 for the operator in Adelaide».
Mr. Darko Zganec goes on to explain that «both fleets have been designed in the early 80's and all engineering drawings are in the paper form». «As the refurbishment jobs are very tight in the delivery as the vehicles need to be back to service quickly the design process must be shortened and modified in comparison to a new vehicle build».
Engineering cannot afford the time to re-draw all the original drawings on CAD as most of the modifications are very minor (change of the parts list, new material, some new interfaces and attachments). In the case of a more substantial change such as replacing the vital components and systems, the combination of old drawings and new CAD design is required.
«With all this in mind» Darko goes on to explain that «we decided to use WiseImage because it would give us that ability to quickly modify old engineering drawings that have been previously scanned into a Tiff format and also combine new CAD data to incorporate into the existing design».
In this typical sample drawing you can see that highlighted sections have been added to the existing drawing either using AutoCAD (in the case of the section view) or directly using WiseImage.
«We can definitely say that WiseImage gave us the ability to meet our tight delivery schedules without the need to additionally train our CAD staff». «For this project we had to hire some additional contract staff to carry out the design work and they all have given us very positive feedback on the software usability even if they had no past experience editing raster images». «Our experienced CAD designers were able to edit their first drawings after only a few hours of initial introduction to WiseImage» Darko goes on to explain, and he continues.
«As I am responsible for the engineering systems and tools for this division in Bombardier I have already recommended WiseImage to some of our larger divisions in Europe that are involved in the refurbishment jobs».
